Carolina Orthotics & Prosthetics sold a controlling share of its company to Wright & Filippis, a Michigan-based health care company.

The North Charleston-based company, which operates six locations across the state, will continue to operate independently. Carolina Orthotics & Prosthetics will also retain its name, management and staffing, according to a news release.

C. Ralph Hooper, a certified prosthetist orthotist, will serve as the company’s president. He was unavailable for comment.

“I’ve known and had great respect for Ralph Hooper and the entire staff of Carolina O&P for many years,” said A.J. Filippis, president and CEO of Wright & Filippis. “Their approach to serving their patients absolutely mirrors the Wright & Filippis mission, so this is a very, very natural fit for everyone involved.”

Filippis said the acquisition will help his company diversify its interests and expand the area the company was founded on — orthotics and prosthetics. The deal marks the company’s first major expansion outside of Michigan.

Wright & Filippis specializes in prosthetics, orthotics, respiratory care services and home medical equipment. It has more than 35 locations and 900 employees.
