Wal-Mart recently opened its Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market in Greer — the first of its kind in South Carolina.

The new store at 805 W. Wade Hampton Blvd., Suite B, will offer groceries, pharmacy items and general merchandise.

“Strong commercial growth in 2012 was another indicator that the city of Greer is continuing to lead the state’s economic recovery, and we’re very proud to be the home of South Carolina’s first Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market,” said Greer Mayor Rick Danner in a news release.

The store creates around 80 part- and full-time jobs. Store Manager Kirsten Tucker began her Wal-Mart career in 1999 as a cake decorator at the store on Woodruff Road in Greenville. Eleven of the store’s associates have worked for Wal-Mart for more than 10 years.

“There was genuine excitement when the project was announced, not only because of the employment opportunities and tax benefits the store brings to the city, but also because our residents realize the quality and variety of goods and services available at the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market,” Danner said. “With a local manager and local employees, this store will be a valued neighbor."

The Greer store offers fresh produce, deli items, frozen items, organic items, a pharmacy, stationery products, paper goods, pet products and hardware items, among others.

The store will be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week.

The first Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market opened in 1998, and today there are approximately 230 Wal-Mart market stores nationwide.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has more than 10,400 stores under 69 banners in 27 countries and e-commerce websites in 10 countries. With fiscal year 2012 sales of approximately $444 billion, Wal-Mart employs more than 2.2 million associates worldwide.

Wal-Mart is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under “WMT.”
