Jack Pledger has been named director of research and deputy director at the Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute.
In this new role, Pledger will build a research program that studies the biology of cancer through activity in Gibbs’ newly opened laboratory.
Pledger currently serves as associate center director for basic science at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla. While there, he headed Moffitt’s federally funded National Functional Genomics Center.
“Dr. Jack Pledger is a respected scientist who was largely responsible for building the reputation of Moffitt — at light speed — to that of one of the top three cancer centers in the world,” Dr. Timothy Yeatman, director of Gibbs Cancer Center and president of its Research Institute, said in a news release.
Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System’s Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute is a nationally recognized cancer treatment and research facility associated with the National Cancer Institute Community Cancer Center program, the Medical University of South Carolina and the M.D. Anderson Physicians Network. Gibbs has sites in Spartanburg and Gaffney, with plans to open a location in Greer this year.
