A manufacturer of metal automotive components is planning to spend $129 million to expand its operations in Union County.

Gestamp North America — a subsidiary of Spanish-based Gestamp — will use the capital investment to construct 123,000 square feet of additional space at its Union facility and add another 182,000 square feet by leasing an existing building, according the S.C. Department of Commerce.

The expansion includes the creation of 130 jobs at the facility, which is located at 1 LSP Road in Union.

“This new project multiplies our size in South Carolina with a remarkable investment that shows how committed we are with our future operations at the Union County plant,” said Jeff Wilson, CEO of Gestamp North America, in a news release. “The United States is a strategic market for us, where we have six plants in five different states, and we want to grow in this country with the major car manufacturers. This is an important step forward.”

The company said the expansion is “an effort to meet the demand from local automotive original equipment manufacturers.” Gestamp South Carolina provides products to BMW Manufacturing Co. in Spartanburg and Volvo Cars in Charleston, according to the release.

Gestamp has 98 manufacturing plants around the world with 10 new plants under construction.

The Coordinating Council for Economic Development approved job development credits for the project and Union County was awarded a $750,000 Rural Infrastructure Grant to help with property improvements.

“Gestamp continues to be a driving force for economic development in Union County,” said Joe Nichols, chairman of the Union County Development Board, in the release. “Their new investment of $129 million and the creation of 130 new jobs are a game changer for this county and the region.”

Hiring for the new positions is expected to being in the second quarter of 2018.
