Anderson University offers remote learning certificate

Apple-Distinguished School Anderson University is offering remote learning certificate programs for K12 educators and administrators across the country with support from the international tech company.

Both individual teachers or school districts can access the open-enrollment courses “Supporting Remote Teachers” and “Fundamentals of Remote Teaching and Learning,” with group customization available through partnership with the university’s Center for Innovation and Digital Learning, according to a news release.

“Developing these certificate courses embodies Anderson’s commitment to servant leadership and its place as a leading innovator in teaching and learning,” Joshua Herron, dean of online and continuous learning, said in the release. “As a three-time Apple Distinguished School, we wanted to share our expertise and experience with the K-12 community. We want our K-12 educators to be able to successfully support students, parents and fellow educators during this time.”  

Each course includes five self-paced modules expected to take 10 hours, adding up to 10 professional development or continuing education credits, according to the release. “Fundamentals of Remote Teaching and Learning” will walk teachers through developing an engagement and assessment strategy, while “Supporting Remote Teachers” will offer other remote administrators and other staff a contingency plan.

“We are thankful we have the opportunity and resources to develop these certificate programs for K-12 educators,” Benjamin Deaton, vice president of digital learning and innovation, said in the release. “Anderson University is fully committed to supporting educators and sharing its expertise to help support all the students impacted during this time.”

According to a press representative, Anderson University is the only three-time Apple-Distinguished School in the state. The program, also used by Spartanburg’s Jesse Boyd Elementary School and Charleston’s Drayton Hall Elementary School, has been used to provide Anderson students with digital microscopes, an augmented-reality platform for human anatomy exploration, Swift and Xcode app development programs among other resources.
