WYFF-TV, Hearst Television’s NBC affiliate based in Greenville, has named a familiar face as its new president and general manager.
John Humphries, formerly the station’s director of sales, will be returning to fill the position left after John Soapes was named president and general manager of WESH-TV and WKCF-TV, Hearst’s NBC and CW affiliates serving Orlando, Daytona and Melbourne, Fla.
For the last six years, Humphries has been president and general manager of WGAL-TV, the company’s NBC affiliate in Lancaster, Pa. His appointment to the Upstate post is effective July 1.
“WYFF and WGAL are two iconic community leaders that are also among the best NBC affiliates in the country,” said Jordan Wertlieb, Hearst Television’s president, in a statement. “John’s exemplary leadership of WGAL, coupled with his past experience in the Upstate of South Carolina, will make this a seamless transition for the outstanding team at WYFF 4.”
While at WGAL-TV, the station earned a Mid-Atlantic Emmy for its news magazine Chronicle and its series Walking the Pipeline, a study on a controversial proposed natural gas pipeline in Pennsylvania.
Prior to his posting at WGAL, Humphries was director of sales for all of WYFF’s media properties, including its website and mobile app. He has also served as general sales manager at WBTV-TV in Charlotte and general sales manager and station manager at WSPA-TV and WASV-TV in Spartanburg.
He started his television career at WSOC-TV in Charlotte as a production specialist and, later, as sports reporter, before moving into sales.
