The city of Inman will accept a $10.8 million loan and $2 million grant for wastewater plant expansion as the U.S. Department of Agriculture invests $281 million in water and wastewater infrastructure across the country.

The Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant program will allow the plant to extend its treatment capacity from 1 million gallons to 1.5 million gallons every day to keep up with the city’s growth, according to a news release. The plant’s storage and maintenance area will be expanded.

Inman is one of 106 recipients across 36 states and Puerto Rico.

“These investments will bring modern, reliable water and wastewater infrastructure to rural communities,” Bette Brand, USDA’s deputy undersecretary for rural development, said in the release. “They will replace deteriorating, leaking water pipes with new ones and upgrade water handling systems that are decades old. These investments create jobs and improve public health and safety for our rural neighbors.”

Rural cities, towns and water districts interested in using the funding for drinking water, stormwater drainage and waste disposal system improvements may be eligible for Water and Waste Disposal Loan funding if they meet certain population criteria, the release said.
