Greenville leaders raise funds for Upstate project

Greenville businesses and the Greenville Chamber’s Leadership Greenville Class 47 are joining forces to launch homeless women and children from Miracle Hill Ministries’ shelter into a more stable future.

The class is currently raising $90,000 to renovate a Greenville home into the ministry’s first transitional home for women exiting Greenville’s Shepherd’s Gate homeless shelter, according to a news release, and have so far raised 75% of their goal. The new space, designed by LS3P, will house up to six women and in some rooms, their children.

ReWa also selected the project to feature in their 2021 Charity Golf Tournament on April 30. Additional community partners include Brasfield & Gorrie, Carolina Power, Clayton Construction, Duke Energy, Hubbell Lighting, LS3P, Morrison Millwork, Stephen and Amber Moss, Southern Disaster Recovery, Southern Pressed Juicery, Schneider Tree Care, Spectrum Interiors, the Swamp Rabbit Café, and Waldrop Inc.

As Greenville County ranks as the third worst county in the state for the number of people experiencing homelessness on any given night, according to the 2019 Greenville Homeless Alliance Report, the need for an exit strategy for homeless individuals in the area has only intensified. Women and their families are the fastest growing sector of the homeless population, according to the release.

“We don’t need more homeless shelters, what we need are sustainable exits out of shelters,” Ryan Duerk, CEO of Miracle Hill Ministries, said in the release.

Leadership Greenville is still seeing additional capital and in-kind donations to reach the $90,000 target, as well as kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, kitchen and bathroom fixtures, kitchen appliances, long-lasting vinyl tile flooring, outdoor decking material and construction and painting services to finish the home.
