BMW hits global sales record for August

Despite continued declines in domestic sales in the United States, The BMW Group reported a global record-setting sales month in August.

The company reported selling 165,431 vehicles across all of its brands – BMW and Mini – during August which was a 5.7% increase over sales recorded the same month a year ago. To date, BMW Group global sales topped 1.5 million – the first time the group reported 1.5 million auto sales in the first eight months of the year.

The South Carolina-produced X models continued to have strong sales in 2016. BMW reported the X range sold 16,612 units worldwide in August. Sales of the X3 increased by 29.7% with 12,663 models sold while the X4 deliveries jumped 10.6% to 4.118 and the X5 sales moved up 9.9% to 12,321 models sold in August.

“Sales are increasing across the range and our electrified models are proving extremely popular – we’ve already sold more alternative drive vehicles this year than in the whole of 2015,” Robertson said.

In addition to strong X model sales in August, the group reported sales of the 7 Series tripled over the same month a year ago and electric hybrid models in the iPerformance group have already topped sales figures set in all of 2015. The group said 17,809 vehicles sold over the first eight months of 2016 were iPerformance vehicles.

The Mini brand sales ticked up 10.3% in August with recorded sales of 22,575. Over the first eight months of the year, Mini global sales have jumped 5.7% over the same period a year ago.

The group saw its strongest sales in Europe as sales in the region were up 6.3%. Year-to-date, sales in Europe are up over 10% with over 685,000 vehicles sold. Italy, Spain and Scandinavia have all see double-digit percentage growth in 2016.

Vehicle sales in Asia increased by 13.8% in August as the company reported delivering 59,047 vehicles to the region for the month. Mainland China was the largest market in the region and had a 9.4% increase in sales over the first eight months of the year while Japan and South Korea also experienced strong increases year-to-date.

Sales in North America have declined by 4.4% in August related to a 7.2% drop in sales in the United States. August sales were up in Canada (+8%) and Mexico (+25.5%). Year-to-date, regional sales are down 7% compared to the same period a year ago.
