Angel investment firm VentureSouth has invested more than $5.2 million into 15 companies this year, which is more than the total of $4.5 million invested in 2017.  The Greenville-based group has returned more than $6 million to investors this year, generating total returns in excess of 3.5 times the investment, according to a news release.

“This year has been a very busy and rewarding one for VentureSouth. We were pleased to return significant capital gains to our investors while deploying more capital than all of last year,” said Charlie Banks, VentureSouth managing director, in the release. “Our investor base continues to grow, and we are excited and determined to continue building upon our successes.”

A couple of existing VentureSouth portfolio companies in the Upstate received follow-on funding from the group — Proterra, Greenville’s electric bus manufacturer, and Atlas Organics, a Spartanburg organic food collection and composting business, the release said.
