Platts Global Energy Awards has named the BASF Jade Tree project as a finalist for construction project of the year and the Shell Philippines Exploration Malampaya Phase III Project as a finalist for engineering project of the year.

Fluor Corp. — a global engineering and construction firm headquartered in Irving, Texas, with an office in Greenville — performed the front-end engineering, design, procurement, construction management, commissioning and startup for the BASF chemical production facility located in Shanghai. The company also provided engineering and procurement for the Philippines project.

Fluor officials said more than 3.4 million safe work hours were put into the Jade Tree project and the project was completed ahead of schedule and within budget.

“This complex project shows that our commitment to safety is achievable, even when faced with an aggressive schedule and other challenges,” said Ken Choudhary, Fluor’s Energy and Chemicals president for Asia Pacific, in a statement. “Being named a finalist for construction project of the year is a great recognition of Fluor’s integrated solutions approach.”

The Jade Tree project included two production lines, a recovery unit, production conveyers, silos, a warehouse, wastewater treatment, an office building, a tank farm, cooling water tower, a 35-kilovolt substation and a telecommunications system, according to Fluor.

The Malampaya project was also completed “safely and ahead of budget.” It is a bridge-linked offshore depletion compression platform built next to an existing shallow water platform for gas production. The project is located offshore of Palawan, Philippines, and is one of seven finalists for the engineering award.

The Jade Tree project was one of nearly 200 nominations for the award, which is given based on performance in various categories.

The Chinese project is the second Fluor contract project mentioned for award. The Project Management Institute selected Chevron’s El Segundo Refinery Coke Drum Project in California as its 2015 project of the year. Fluor conducted engineering, procurement, construction management and front-end design work on that project.
