Road projects begin today in Greenville

Construction is set to begin today, June 11, on two transportation improvement projects in the Woodruff Road/Verdae Boulevard sector of the city of Greenville.

The first project is a new two-lane road called the PNG Connector that will run parallel to Woodruff Road, connecting Woodruff Industrial Lane with Verdae Boulevard. Piedmont Natural Gas, which has a facility on Woodruff Industrial Lane, provided $1,287,500 of the total project cost. Additional funding partners include the city of Greenville ($400,000); Greenville County ($400,000); Greenville County Legislative Delegation Transportation Committee ($400,000); Hollingsworth Funds and Verdae Properties ($312,500 plus right-of-way donation) and Magnolia Park Greenville ($200,000), according to a news release.

The project entails approximately one mile of roadway improvements, which includes the new PNG Connector; the extension of two existing dead-end streets (Ketron Court and Green Heron Road) to connect to the new road with roundabout intersections; and the construction of a right-turn lane and other improvements on Woodruff Industrial Lane. Construction is expected to be complete in spring 2019. While construction should have a minimal impact on traffic, motorists are asked to use caution when traveling in the vicinity, according to the city.

Also scheduled to begin on today is the Old Sulphur Springs Bridge Replacement Project. Located just off Verdae Boulevard on Old Sulphur Springs Road, the Old Sulphur Springs bridge is scheduled to be replaced with a new, wider bridge with 12-foot travel lanes and a shoulder area. The total cost of the project, which also includes repaving a portion of Old Sulphur Springs Road, is $391,830. The project will require closing the section of Old Sulphur Springs Road between Verdae Boulevard and Cascades Verdae and detour signs will be posted on Verdae Boulevard, Salters Road and Old Sulphur Springs Road to alert and direct motorists. Access to Cascades Verdae will be maintained; however, all traffic exiting the Cascades Verdae property will be required to turn left onto Old Sulphur Springs Road for the duration of the project, which is expected to be complete by Labor Day, the release said.
