Ecommerce giant FedEx will invest $45 million in an additional Anderson County facility expected to create 12 jobs.

The 251,000-square-foot, built-to-suit new facility, located at the corner of Highway 81 and Evergreen Road, will help the company increase regional sortation capacity and improve distribution, according to a news release. FedEx is investing more than $10 million in state-of-the-art material handling equipment.

“This is yet further evidence of the continuing growth of Anderson County,” Councilman Brett Sanders said in a news release. “We know that these numbers will continue to grow as our citizens are productive and have a strong work ethic.”

Founded in 1971 in Little Rock, Ark., the company is best known for its air delivery service, FedEx Express. Since then, FedEx also started FedEx Ground, FedEx Office (originally known as Kinko's), FedEx Supply Chain, FedEx Freight, and various other services across multiple subsidiaries. FedEx also assists in the transport of some U.S. Postal Service packages through the company’s Air Cargo Network contract.

Project Highway 81 Logistics was the code name for the project in the County Council agenda until the company went public with the announcement.

“Project Highway 81 Logistics is locating its project in Anderson County bringing greatly needed technical jobs and capital investment to our county” Burriss Nelson, Anderson County Economic Development Director, said in the release.
