Laurens Electric offers student trips, scholarship

Laurens Electric Cooperative is offering four local students an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. or Columbia this summer through its annual Washington Youth Tour and Cooperative Youth Summit contest.

The contest includes an application, two references and an interview process. After co-op officials judge the entrants, four students will be awarded one of the two trips, which begin June 15 and July 9, respectively, according to a news release.

Students within the cooperative’s service area who are entering their senior year in high school next fall are eligible to enter the contest. Students do not have to receive power from Laurens Electric Cooperative to qualify.

The deadline for submitting applications is Feb. 8.

Participants in the Washington Youth Tour will travel with more than 40 other South Carolina students to Washington where they will meet with their state representatives and senators, visit historical sites, learn about cooperatives and spend time with other students from across the country.

Cooperative Youth Summit participants will go on a private tour of the S.C. Statehouse, meet with the governor or lieutenant governor, engage in team-building exercises and learn about electric cooperatives and the co-op business model.

Contest winners also will be eligible to compete for a $5,000 college scholarship that will be awarded to one South Carolina trip participant. The scholarship will be granted based on a community service project completed by the student, the release said.
