The city of Greenville and the West Greenville Neighborhood Association will rededicate Walker Park on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 5:30 p.m. AARP recently awarded Greenville a $10,000 Community Challenge Grant to renovate the park. The grant was leveraged with $7,760 in in-kind labor from the parks and recreation and public works departments and another $3,500 in Community Development Block Grant funding from the Community Development Division.

The project scope included refurbishing the existing benches and horseshoe pit and adding new amenities, including a shelter, an ADA accessible horseshoe pit and ADA accessible game tables. An ADA accessible ramp was also installed at one of the entrances to the park, according to a news release.

Walker Park was a focal point of the Walker Place subdivision developed by the city and dedicated in 1988. When Walker Place was developed, it included 38 new homes. Thirty-two of the homes were made available for first time home buyers, while six were developed in partnership with the Greenville Housing Authority and maintained as affordable rental homes. The .25-acre park is named in honor of J. Wilbur Walker, a West Greenville resident and former principal of Washington High School, who dedicated his career and life to helping others and advocated for many of the improvements in the West Greenville neighborhood.
