The city of Greenville has allocated $552,048 toward financial assistance for citizens struggling with housing and food costs due to the COVID-19 pandemic or AIDS/HIV and the nonprofits serving those groups.

The city has awarded $463,903 in Community Development Block grants and $88,145 in Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS from federal coronavirus aid, according to a news release.

Through the Community Development Block Grant Fund, the city granted the Greenville County Human Relations Commission $389,803 for mortgage, rent and utility assistance, as well as housing counseling for individuals with landlord/tenant issues related to evictions possibly attributable to COVID-19, according to the news release. About $10,000 of the funding will be allocated for free financial counseling for service recipients.

United Ministries received $56,000 to assist tenants in need of rent and utility funding for up to six months, purchase personal protective equipment for the organization’s employees and to expands its operations.

The city gifted United Housing Connection with $8,100 for installing a security system and a COVID-19 education program at Reedy Place, a homeless shelter for individuals with a mental illness. The grant also will go toward PPE for residents.

Project Host will use its $10,000 grant from the city to finance meals at its soup kitchen and food truck, according to the release.

The city also awarded $81,045 to AID Upstate and $7,100 to Upper Savannah Care Services for rental, mortgage, utility and food assistance for clients suffering from HIV/AIDS in Greenville, Anderson, Pickens and Laurens counties.
