Greenville’s gig economy giving some of its delivery drivers a little bit more relief at the pump.

Bite Squad, a local on-demand food delivery service, has made its gas discount program pilot permanent as gas prices surge to more than $4.60 in the city, according to June 15 data from Gas Buddy.

The initiative, which soft launched in March, gives its drivers 5% off gas at a number of major stations, according to a news release. Bite Squad’s GasCard is located on its driver app.

“We talk with our drivers every day, and they tell us the help with paying for gas is essential,” Chris Barnes, director of Bite Squad’s driver experience, said in the news release. “We’re glad we can make our GasCard permanent while others are ending their assistance programs.”

Bite Squad operates an online ordering technology platform, providing delivery, carry out and dine-in options. According to the release, the company links local restaurants and grocery stores to diners in underserved U.S. markets.

As of March 31, 2021, Bite Squad and its other delivery services operate in approximately 1,000 cities in the United States, including Columbia, Greenville and Easley.

The company originated with Kian Salehi, a first-generation Iranian immigrant who grew up watching his dad work up the ranks of Domino’s Pizza, starting out as a delivery driver and then, later, a franchisor.

After Salehi studied economics at the University of Minnesota, he and his friend Arash Allaei would later launch a series of startups in Atlanta and Minneapolis, including Bite Squad in 2012, according to the company.
