The S.C. Asphalt Pavement Association anticipates 1,000 additional jobs coming to the state over the next five years. The growth is expected because of the 2017 S.C. Roads Bill, which is funding a resurfacing project expected to bring more than half of the state’s roads up to “good” condition in 10 years, according to a news release.

The association and its member organizations are visiting with schools, vocational centers, state agencies and other organizations to encourage people to apply or consider a career in the asphalt industry. The group also is looking to increase partnerships with agencies, organizations and schools across the state.

The association launched the statewide Asphalt Works campaign earlier this year to promote the hiring need and to highlight career opportunities.

“There is a national resurgence of vocational education and skilled trades, which may suit students looking to thrive outside of a traditional four-year education,” Ashley R. Batson, executive director of the S.C. Asphalt Pavement Association, said in the release. “The asphalt industry offers swift career advancement, high-paying skilled jobs and a family environment where workers feel a great sense of integrity and pride in their work.”

The association is working with the Midlands Education and Business Alliance and the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce, as well as adult education groups across Richland, Lexington and Fairfield counties. Additionally, representatives visited with students in Greenville County earlier this year, and the organization works with S.C. Department of Juvenile Justice students who are working on their high school equivalency requirements and looking at career options.
