Clemson University College of Science professor of chemistry Jeff Anker has been named a senior member of the National Academy of Inventors.

Anker is one of 54 academic inventors from around the nation and world who were honored in the spring 2019 class.  Senior members are active faculty, scientists and administrators from member institutions who have “brought, or aspire to bring, real impact on the welfare of society,” according to the National Academy of Inventors website.

Anker, the Wallace R. Roy Distinguished Associate Professor in analytical chemistry at Clemson University, has a reputation for “forming teams to develop innovative ideas at the boundaries between disciplines that include chemistry, bioengineering, microbiology and medicine,” according to the news release

“When I was a young boy, I wanted to be an inventor when I grew up,” Anker said in the news release. “As I grew older, however, I learned that ‘inventor’ was not a conventional occupation. So I became a chemistry professor. But this gave me a chance to keep developing new ideas — especially biomedical sensors — and now I’m delighted and honored to be elected a senior member of the National Academy of Inventors.”

Anker has four licensed patents involving sensors and has been awarded more than a dozen federal grants, according to the release.
