ScanSource named Corporate Donor of the Year

On Thursday, Nov. 15, the South Carolina Piedmont Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals will celebrate National Philanthropy Day with a luncheon to recognize Upstate individuals and companies for their philanthropic efforts.

The lunch will be held at Embassy Suites on Verdae Boulevard in Greenville, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Piedmont chapter is recognizing ScanSource as the Corporate Donor of the Year; Ann Bryan as the Individual Philanthropist of the Year; Vic Bailey IV, Leslie Bailey Calicutt and Neely Bailey Darr as the Young Philanthropists of the Year; and Dr. Gloria Webb Close as the Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year, according to a news release.

Every year since 1986 when President Ronald Reagan first proclaimed Nov. 15 as National Philanthropy Day, communities across the globe have celebrated by hosting events to recognize activities of donors, volunteers, foundations, leaders, corporations, and others engaged in philanthropy, according to the release.

Habitat for Humanity raises the wall

Habitat for Humanity, Duke Energy, the Greenville Drive and other partners in the “Home Run for Heroes” campaign have raised the wall on a Habitat home for Air Force veteran family T.J. and Felicia Rush of Greenville and their two daughters.

The wall-raising event was the culmination of the season-long “Home Runs for Heroes” campaign, through which Duke Energy pledged a contribution to Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County’s Veteran Build program for each home run hit by a Greenville Drive player. Through this funding effort, Duke Energy has pledged $25,000 toward the construction of the Rush Family home, and employees from both Duke Energy and the Greenville Drive are volunteering to help with construction, according to a news release.

"Veterans have an amazing impact on communities when they return home to build families and careers," said said Kodwo Ghartey-Tagoe, state president for Duke Energy in South Carolina, in the release. “When our communities succeed, we succeed. Together, through partnerships with organizations like Habitat for Humanity and the Greenville Drive, we can support our veterans and help them make a lasting impact on and in the communities where we all live and work.”

Other donors who contributed funds to help offset costs for the Homes for Heroes effort include the John I. Smith Charities, Bank of America, BMW Manufacturing, Piedmont Natural Gas, AFL, South Carolina Ports Authority and the Grainger Foundation, with support from the Forestry Association of South Carolina, Starr Electric and the Furman University student chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
