More than 100 Spartanburg community leaders gathered Tuesday for the Spartanburg County Foundation’s opening ceremony for what they call the state’s first center for philanthropy.
The new center, called the Robert Hett Chapman III Center for Philanthropy, is located at 431 E. Kennedy St. on the campus of The Spartanburg County Foundation. The ceremony was delayed due to COVID-19 precautions.
“This is a historic occasion as we open the first center for philanthropy in the state,” Mary
Thomas, executive director for the new center and COO of The Spartanburg
County Foundation, said in a news release. “This building is a community asset and represents the limitless possibilities of what can happen when we come together to generate change, not only in Spartanburg County but also throughout the Southeast region.”
In 2019, as part of its 75th anniversary, the foundation announced plans to build the center
and establish a collaborative, shared space to enhance the foundation’s community presence.
“The Robert Hett Chapman III Center for Philanthropy will bring new tools and new ideas that will help build the capacity of nonprofit organizations of all sizes, which is so important after a very challenging year for these organizations,” Troy Hanna, CEO of The Spartanburg County Foundation, said in the news release. “Through this ceremony, we wanted to celebrate and to thank our generous donors who have invested in this Center that will shape our community’s future.”
