(Rendering/Seamon WhitesideThe Greenville City Council is opening the floor tonight at 5:30 p.m. to citizens hoping to get a word in on what’s next for two more decades of development.

The public hearing will cover comments on GVL2040, a master plan prompting updates to the city’s land management code, as well as budget and policy decisions in response to the city’s 25% population growth over the past two decades. The city is required to update its comprehensive plan every 10 years, according to the agenda.

Consultants CZB LLC and Ingalls Planning and Design led efforts to develop the strategy over 18 months, along with the city, a 41-member steering committee and input from the community, according to the agenda. The plan seeks to preserve 35% of Greenville’s remaining vacant land, income-restrict at least 10% of all new housing in the city and bolster mobility options along the city’s primary corridors to cut down on automotive traffic, according to a summary of the plan.

The council also will vote to move forward on ordinances to appropriate $2,550,000 from the city’s capital project fund for public improvements along Field Street near the entrance to Fluor Field and to transfer surplus city property near Unity Park to the Greenville Housing Fund LLC  for the development affordable housing.

The property is located alongside Oscar, Nassau, Meadow, West Washington and South Hudson streets, according to the agenda.

Field Street improvements include a pedestrian plaza for special events and public restrooms.
