A popular national co-ed clothing retailer is setting up shop on Main Street.

With more than 150 locations — including its store on the iconic King Street in Charleston — Madewell is opening a location in downtown Greenville, at the corner of Main and East North streets.

According to Beth Brotherton, Greenville’s director of communications and engagement, a Madewell spokesperson said the anticipated opening date for the new location is set for this month or February.

The key to a vibrant downtown is variety, said Brotherton, and the city is fortunate to have stores that attract diverse customers.

“Anytime our buildings receive a fresh facelift, we consider that valuable, but to have a well-known national retailer fill the space is exciting,” said Brotherton. “Madewell is a clothing retailer under the J.Crew umbrella. Main Street currently offers several women’s clothing boutiques. Some boutiques are considered chains, but others are local business owners. The name recognition of national brands attracts customers to downtown who may never have shopped in our local businesses.”

Downtown also boasts popular men’s boutiques with A Polished Man, Rush Wilson, A. Smith Clothiers and Cahaly’s, with additional options for children such as OP Taylor, a toy store, and Rocket Fizz, which offers fun sodas and candy, Brotherton added. There are even boutiques downtown that offer selective and premium home goods and furniture.

Bacon Construction Co. is handling the renovation of the 3,200-square-foot space next to The Booty Shop.
