A $5.1 million federal grant will be used by the S.C. Technology and Aviation Center to repave the primary taxiway at Donaldson Field.
The airport is used by companies such as Lockheed Martin, who has a repair facility at SCTAC. Danny Moyd, COO at SCTAC, said air cargo companies deliver freight to various Upstate companies.
The taxiway, known as “Alpha,” has not been repaved since its original construction in 1942 and Moyd said when complete, the taxiway will be able to accommodate larger aircraft and could help SCTAC attract new tenants.
“The project will create a safer airfield for existing users, however Donaldson Field is always trying to improve the airfield to attract new users,” Moyd said.
Construction of the runway is expected to begin sometime at the end of October and will take approximately six months to complete.
The SCTAC project is one of 72 projects funded by the Federal Aviation Administration. Funding totaled $162.4 million for airport infrastructure.
