Salvation Army celebrates 80th National Donut Day

On Friday, June 1, the Salvation Army will celebrate the 80th National Donut Day at The Donut Experiment at 2123 Augusta St. In addition to donating 10% of sales to the Salvation Army for its social ministry programs, The Donut Experiment will be giving away a free cinnamon sugar donut with a purchase.

The Salvation Army began National Donut Day in honor of the “Doughnut Lassies” of WWI, according to a news release. In 1917, approximately 250 Salvation Army volunteers went overseas to aid American soldiers in France. These female volunteers began serving donuts to the soldiers, and they are credited with popularizing the donut in America when the soldiers returned home after the war.
