Carolina Handling Approved as DOD SkillBridge Partner

Carolina Handling has been approved by the U.S. Department of Defense as a DOD SkillBridge Authorized Organization to provide job training opportunities for military service members transitioning to the civilian workforce.

DOD SkillBridge allows active-duty service members and select groups of the National Guard and Reserves within 180 days of their separation date the opportunity to gain civilian work experience through job training, employment skills training, apprenticeships and internships and gives industry partners access to a highly trained and motivated workforce at no cost.

“Being approved as a DOD SkillBridge partner is an exciting step for Carolina Handling and our recruiting team,” said Corporate Recruiter Catie Beth Bishop. “Hiring continues to be a challenge in all verticals, but especially competitive in the field service technician position. DOD SkillBridge is a cost-effective talent acquisition pipeline that provides access to highly trained individuals with technical skills and strong teamwork and leadership experience.”

Service members participating in SkillBridge programs continue receiving their military compensation and benefits, allowing employers time to evaluate the service member’s suitability for future employment. Service members can be granted up to 180 days of permissive duty to focus solely on training full-time with approved industry partners.

Almost 13 percent of Carolina Handling associates served or are serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Joan Herlong & Associates Sotheby’s International Realty honors top Associates

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Joan Herlong & Associates Sotheby’s International Realty has honored its top Associates for December of 2023.

In the Greenville office, the top Associates for transactions closed for buyer clients were Drew Torres and Grace Herlong Loveless, and the top Associates for listings closed were Matt Nocks and Loveless. In the Clemson/Lakes office, the top Associates for transactions closed for buyer clients were Diane Bostrom and Lisa Vogel, and the top agent for listings closed was Suzanne Withington.

Torres is a University of South Carolina graduate who moved to Greenville in 2019 to pursue his passion in real estate. Torres was Rookie of the Year in 2020 and earned International Diamond Society status, which is for the top 15% of agents globally for another agency. He joined Joan Herlong & Associates Sotheby’s International Realty in 2021 and was a Chairman’s Circle honoree in 2022 for doing more than $10 million in sales.

Loveless joined Joan Herlong & Associates Sotheby’s International Realty team in 2017. She sold more than $9 million in her first year and was named the company’s Rookie of the Year. She became a member of the President’s Circle, which is for Associates who did more than $5 million in sales, and joined the Chairman’s Circle in 2021 and 2022. She also was the top producer in the Greenville office in 2022.

Nocks joined Joan Herlong & Associates Sotheby’s International Realty in 2019. In 2020, he became a member of the President’s Circle and received the Most Improved Award, and earned President’s Circle honors again in 2022.

Bostrom has been with Joan Herlong & Associates Sotheby’s International Realty since April 2021 and she became a member of the Chairman’s Circle in 2021, and the President’s Circle in 2022. She is committed to her clients and ensures they get the best service each time.

Before Vogel joined Joan Herlong & Associates Sotheby’s International Realty, she was one of the top 5% of agents at different brokerages and a member of the firm’s President’s Circle Society. Before that, she was the Broker-in-Charge for one of the largest North Carolina real estate companies. In 2022, Vogel had the largest sale for anyone in the Clemson office.

New to Joan Herlong & Associates Sotheby’s International Realty, but certainly no real estate rookie is Withington, as she’s been in the real estate business since 1990. Withington grew up in a family that invested in both residential and commercial real estate, making it a world she knows well. To her, luxury real estate means homes that feel like a sanctuary.

“We ended our year on a strong note,” said Joan Herlong, owner and CEO of Joan Herlong & Associates Sotheby’s International Realty. “I’m proud of how our Associates are creating new opportunities for people in the Upstate and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2024.”

Spartanburg, SC — American Technology Venture Lab Inc. (ATVL) proudly announces its inaugural cadre to be hosted at The George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Dennis Hayes, best known as the developer of the Hayes Smartmodem and Hayes Microcomputer Products, a company that led the PC industry in connecting to the early Internet, and now the Chairman and Founder of ATVL expressed his enthusiasm. “We are pleased that Jeffrey Stinson, the new Dean at The George has been working with us and has agreed to host the inaugural cadre which will consist of four one-day sessions held eight weeks apart on March 1, April 26, June 21, and August 16, 2024. “The Johnson College of Business & Economics is excited to host the inaugural cadre of the American Technology Venture Lab,” remarked Dean Stinson.

“Partnering with the ATVL to support the entrepreneurial eco-system in The Upstate is a perfect match for our mission to enhance economic development of the region.”

The American Technology Venture Lab (ATVL) is a non-profit organization that delivers a next- generation, objectives-based mentoring and educational program for scalable, early stage, science and technology-based ventures. “The mission of ATVL is to empower our next genera_on to flourish near their hometowns by cul_va_ng an ecosystem where their talent contributes to innova_on and aligns with local opportuni_es. Through our forward-thinking mentoring and educa_onal programs, we champion scalable science and technology ventures, fueling regional economic growth and ensuring our youth no longer need to leave Upstate, South Carolina for top-_er careers.”

“Our goal,” Hayes commented, “is to harness technologies such as information, life sciences, transportation, and materials to drive regional development, focusing on pivotal sectors like commerce, biotech, advanced manufacturing, automation, robotics, vertical farming, medical devices, logistics, supply chain, and artificial intelligence.” Mentors who are successful entrepreneurs, subject matter experts, angel or VC investors, and corporate executives are carefully selected for their experience that matches the ventures in the inaugural cadre. Mentors volunteer to work with ventures that match their interests for four hours between ATVL sessions. Ventures that do not attract a mentor at the one-day session are dropped from the cadre, but ventures who attract a mentor to volunteer at all four sessions become a graduate of ATVL. He further noted, “We are very pleased with the initial reaction we have received from early-stage ventures throughout the region. This is the only objectives based mentoring activity of its nature in upstate South Carolina.” With preparation for the inaugural cadre underway, ATVL stands as a beacon of technology and entrepreneurial innovation in the Upstate region. Hayes concluded, “We learned a lot from other entrepreneurial development programs and believe we have found several ways to improve the overall process and make it a region-wide complement to established academic and community based entrepreneurial activities. We appreciate the participation and help of everyone in the region interested in creating more high-paying technology careers right here in Upstate, South Carolina.”

ATVL is actively seeking sponsors from corporations, economic development, and philanthropic sources in The Upstate. We are ramping up the activities with the support of paid student interns and selected faculty. We are receiving venture applications that will be processed to select the best candidates for the inaugural cadre. The candidates will be interviewed as part of an intensive selection process to create a mixture of ventures from a range of technologies that can learn from each other’s challenges. Mentors are asked to apply and will be recruited from academic, corporate, economic development, angel or VC investors, and those successful entrepreneurs who have an interest in asking a lot of questions when they meet the founders of a new venture. While we are establishing the infrastructure, systems, and procedures for success, we are seeking to develop a broad base of financial support that will sustain the success of ATVL over the coming years.

Recovery Centers of America Shares Dry January Tips Toward a Healthy 2024

GREENVILLE, SC  – Recovery Centers of America (RCA), a healthcare network of premier substance use disorder treatment facilities, today shared practical tips to help anyone focused on living and learning from Dry January, the year-opening effort to refocus health goals and reestablish a safe and appropriate relationship to alcohol.

“The fact that Dry January is now a well-established annual challenge undertaken by millions of Americans speaks to its vital importance, whether as a way to focus on a fresh start or to continue a life of sobriety,” said Brett Cohen, Chief Executive Officer at RCA. “Recovery Centers of America offers tools and services – both inpatient and outpatient – that ease the path to recovery, and we aim to be part of a broader community that celebrates healthy living. We hope these tips are useful for anyone seeking a healthy start to 2024, and all the months that follow.”

Though Dry January is generally thought of as complete abstinence from indulging in alcohol, for those who are addicted, suddenly stopping the use of alcohol may cause withdrawal and can be fatal. Regular drinkers should consult their doctors before completely discontinuing alcohol use. If you detect withdrawal symptoms while participating in Dry January, reach out to an addiction treatment center or consult with a treatment specialist. For more information on withdrawal, visit the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).

RCA’s 2024 Dry January Tips

• Set goals. Forget resolutions; What are your intentions this year? What steps do you need to take to get there? Focusing on your goals will make you less likely to be tempted by drugs or alcohol. If you are in recovery, you can also use your sobriety goals as a way to connect with other people who are in recovery. Sharing your goals and plans for the future can help you stay connected to your sobriety and maintain your motivation.

• Connect with family and friends. Our connection to others is what keeps us grounded, rooted to our communities, and focused on leading successful lives. Use January to solidify and reconnect those relationships, setting the tone for the coming year. If you are in recovery, call at least one person in your recovery support system each day. Commit to attend in-person or virtual meetings regularly. Keep this in mind: Meeting Makers Make It! If traveling, make sure you attend meetings and stay close to your support network. If you need help, pick up the phone and call a support companion.

• Get back to basics. Are you feeling overwhelmed by your recovery intentions, or even the prospects of surviving January without a drink? Focus on basic self-care such as getting adequate sleep, drinking enough water, and making healthy food choices. Individual choices toward healthy behaviors such as these do add up. Each intention is meaningful and builds a foundation for full-year success.

• Lean on an expert. Struggling to maintain sobriety? Turn to a professional for advice, new strategies, and a deeper understanding of the forces behind your struggles. If you suspect you need help, there are many options available. Concerned about maintaining family and career commitments while in treatment? Ask about outpatient programs and workflex inpatient programs that fit your schedule and lifestyle.

• Focus on overall physical and mental health and wellness. Exercising daily, even just going for a 20-minute walk, is great for both your physical and mental health. Take time to get active, creating whatever workout regimen is most fun and sustainable for you. Also, take time to slow down, using meditation to clear your mind and keep you focused on your goals and things that are most important to you. In addition to regular physical activity and stress management, sleep hygiene is critical to supporting physical and emotional well-being.

• Seek out healthy activities. If you know attending a certain party, dinner or other gathering will put your sobriety at risk, it’s OK to say no. There are plenty of other activities that don’t involve drugs or alcohol. Seek them out, and companionship from others who are also abstaining from alcohol in January. Often, avoiding alcohol means avoiding people who are intoxicated or who are trying to get you to join them.

“Use this month as a launching pad for either maintaining sobriety or seeking solutions that will lead to a full year of health,” said Cohen. “Regardless of what that looks like, now is the perfect time to focus on you.”

If you or your loved one are struggling with drug or alcohol addiction and need help, the staff at Recovery Centers of America is available 24/7. Call 1-844-5-RCA-NOW (844-722-2669) for help today.
