Clemson University will furlough employees in response to the financial impact of COVID-19 on the school.

The furlough period, beginning Sept. 1 and continuing until the end of the calendar year, follows a hiring freeze and other cost-reduction measures, according to a news release. The number of furlough days taken corresponds with the salaries of each employee. About half of the school’s entire full-time workforce will be impacted.

Contracted employees will take a pay reduction, while President James Clements and athletic department employees who make more than $400,000 annually have volunteered to take a 10% reduction in compensation, the release said.

Furloughed employees will continue to receive health care, retirement and other benefits but cannot use their annual leave, compensatory time or holiday or sick leave during the furlough period, according to the release.
