A Charlotte-based fine foods store permanently closed its downtown Greenville doors abruptly over the holidays without much notice — other than a sign on the door.

On the front door of Reid’s Fine Foods located at 1 N. Laurens St. in downtown Greenville, a “Store Closed” sign read:

“After careful consideration, we have decided that it is in our best interest to close our store. We have enjoyed serving you over the years and we thank you for your patronage. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

At the end of 2020, GSA Business Report reported that gourmet restaurant closures may be at an all-time high, but Reid’s Fine Foods was still standing strong in the community.

“We’re ready to grow beyond Mecklenburg County and Charlotte,” Tom Coker, CEO and president of Reid’s told GSA at the time.

As Coker sought out additional locations to add to Reid’s four Charlotte stores, Greenville stood out as a “vibrant and youthful market” alongside Atlanta and Charleston, he said in October 2020.

Coker signed the lease for the property in February 2020, two weeks before the pandemic fully hit. Renovations and the pandemic pushed back Reid’s expected summer 2020 grand opening.

GSA Business Report attempted to reach Reid’s via email and social media on Tuesday morning but has yet to receive a response.
