A Greenville native who returned to his hometown to open a high-end restaurant downtown is making his mark on the national scene.

Esquire magazine recently named Scoundrel one of its “Best New Restaurants in America, 2023.”

It’s the only restaurant in South Carolina to get a mention on the list of 50 top spots, after reviewers “crisscrossed the nation, sampling some two hundred new dining establishments that serve almost every conceivable type of cuisine,” the article states.

The French-inspires restaurant, 18 N. Main St., has been getting lots of attention since it opened last year. Namely because of its owner, Joe Cash, who returned to Greenville after working in some of the world’s top restaurants, including Per Se, Noma and the original Torrisi.

Esquire singled out Scoundrel’s caviar service, describing its “thick potato pucks fried in duck fat and slathered with crème fraîche are just the right vessel.” It also gave props to the tableside beef tartare as “a show in itself.”
