Spartanburg’s Hospice Care of South Carolina, which recently merged with Agape Hospice, has adopted a new predictive modeling software, Muse, to help alert their team when a patient needs additional visits from staff members.

“By adopting a supportive tool like Muse, we can ensure our patients are receiving enhanced hands-on care in those critical last 7- 10 days of life," Troy Yarbrough, CEO of Hospice Care of South Carolina, said in a news release. "Muse gives our caregivers additional insights to patient needs and allows us to quickly identify which patients require focused support.  There is no other product in the market that provides this kind of detail and insight."

As Centers for Medicare and Medicaid boosted their standards for hospice programs based on the number of visits in a patient’s expected last seven days of life, Hospice Care of South Carolina has used Muse software to determine when to increase their visits to 10 or more, according to the release. South Carolina’s state average is about six patient visits during this period.

The software uses thousands of data points to determine when a patient’s health is likely to decline within the next two weeks.

“We are proud to work closely with the HCSC team on implementing our solution,” Jennifer Maxwell, president and co-founder of Muse Healthcare, said in the release. “We believe the Muse transition product will change hospice care as we know it today.  With all the activity and discussion around improving quality at the bedside, adopting enhanced tools to support the clinical effort will ensure the hospice is prepared for the future."
