Passenger activity at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport is increasing at a rate four times faster than the national average, according to a news release from GSP.

Citing statistics released by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, GSP reported that during the first seven months of the year, passenger activity increased by 15.7% at GSP. During the same time period, average growth for all U.S. airports grew by 3.6%.

During July 2019, GSP served 238,307 total passengers, an increase of 16.8% compared to the same month last year, according to the release. The increase in July marked 22 consecutive months of passenger activity growth for the airport. For the first seven months of the year, GSP served 1,466,915 total passengers, an increase of 15.7% over the same period in 2018.

“Upstate area travelers continue to respond positively to the new flight options added from GSP over the last 12 months,” Dave Edwards, GSP president and CEO, said in the release. “The ongoing support of local travelers and corporations is critical to our efforts to further enhance air service for our region. By choosing to fly local, passengers help us demonstrate to airlines that additional opportunities for growth still exist from our hometown airport.”

Cargo activity at GSP increased 8.5%, or 9.9 million pounds, in July 2019 versus the same month in 2018 when they handled 9.1 million pounds of cargo. For the first seven months of the year, GSP’s cargo activity increased 0.2% (67.9 million pounds) compared to 2018 (67.8 million pounds), according to the release.
