Spartanburg-based manufacturer Milliken & Co. has donated 200 Daisy and Brownie uniforms to the Girl Scouts of South Carolina-Mountains to Midlands, the council that serves the Upstate and Midlands.

Milliken made the fabric for the new uniforms which were recently rolled out nationwide. Milliken collaborated with Unifi to integrate Repreve fiber into the fabric, which is made using recycled post-consumer plastic bottles, to make the uniforms more sustainable.

The donation made by Milliken will provide uniforms to girls in kindergarten through third grade.

“Milliken is a powerful ally,” Lora Tucker, CEO of Girl Scouts of South Carolina-Mountains to Midlands, said in the release. “The dedication and commitment to growing the next generation of environmentally conscious female leaders is a belief that we share with Milliken. Without the generous donation of uniforms, many girls would not be able to fully participate in the Girl Scout leadership experience.”

Bank aids Greenwood YMCA construction project

The Countybank Foundation, representing Countybank and Greenwood Capital, recently donated $25,000 to the Lakelands Region YMCA.

This donation represents an ongoing partnership with the Lakelands Region YMCA and will go toward Greenwood’s new fitness center. The fitness center, located in the former Bowers-Rogers Resale store, is expected to open during the summer.

“It is important that the people in our community have a positive place to focus their energy,” David Tompkins, Greenwood market executive of Countybank, said in a news release. “Giving to the Lakelands Region YMCA allows us to support a community and service-based organization that has an impact across Greenwood.”

The Lakelands Region YMCA offers a variety of programs from afterschool and summer camps to fitness and sports. Its mission is centered on putting Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy mind, body and spirit, according to the release.

“The Lakelands Region YMCA is very appreciative of the Countybank Foundation’s continued support,” CEO Brian Harlan of Lakelands Region YMCA, said in the release. “Their contributions help us build better programs and facilities, and ultimately a better community.”
