The club for the last 40 years has been a sort of country club in the sky — without golf and tennis — on the 17th floor of the One Liberty Square building at 55 Beattie Place. BNG bought the club several years ago and earlier this year announced plans to invest nearly $2 million in improvements.

BNG announced the new name today along with a revitalization plan, logo, brand and interior design intended to follow the trajectory of growth in Greenville, the company said in a news release.

“The Commerce Club has had an important history in Greenville for 40 years,” Sean Laney, founder and president of BNG Hospitality, said in the news release.  “However, over the last few years, many in the community have forgotten what a hidden gem it is — with some being unclear on if the club was even open and in operation anymore. We wanted to give the club an up-to-date atmosphere of an engaging, refined and relevant lifestyle space that will appeal to a wide audience of prospective members.”

BNG says the renovations will change virtually everything except the 360-degree views of the city and the mountains.

“The new designs, finishes and furnishings are inspired by an alchemy of sophisticated, Southern hospitality, melded with the rustic elements and refined textures that represent the unique, natural beauty of the Upstate region,” General Manager Ted Sweeney said in the release.

BNG also plans new food and beverage offerings as well as programming. The new menu will highlight “approachable, yet refined” cuisine featuring local ingredients, craft cocktails and beer, and a full selection of wine.

“I’m glad to see a rebranding of the Commerce Club to the City Club,” Mayor Knox White said in the release. “The revitalization of the space and name is symbolic of the growth our city is experiencing.”

The club will continue to offer places for members to work. Members can set-up shop for the day in the Emerald Lounge or in one of the mini meeting rooms.  Small and large private event spaces are available with no room rental fees to club members.

With a limited number of new memberships available for a preferred pre-opening initiation fee and monthly dues waived until the fall reopening, Membership Director Kimberley Loper says now is a good time to join. She can be reached at 864-232-5600, extension 2224, or by email at [email protected].
