Somnus Mattress International LLC, a manufacturer of hybrid, memory foam mattresses, today announced plans to establish operations in Cherokee County with a $13 million investment expected to create 55 new jobs, according to Gov. Henry McMaster’s office.

The company produces multi-layer mattresses that combine memory foam with an innerspring system. The mattresses are compressible and roll packable, which leads to more efficient shipping, a news release said. The plant will be at 210 Henson Road in Blacksburg with operations commencing next month.

“Somnus Mattress International LLC is excited to open its new mattress factory in Blacksburg,” Managing Partner David Li said in the release. “We choose South Carolina for our expansion project because of the business-friendly environment and its skilled workforce. We look forward to a mutually beneficial relationship and will definitely consider South Carolina for all future projects.”

Another mattress manufacturing company announced plans for an $8.5 million plant in Cherokee County in December 2019. Palmetto Pedic said through the Commerce Department that the investment into a site at 418 Chandler Drive in Gaffney would create more than 60 new jobs.

The Coordinating Council for Economic Development approved a $250,000 Rural Infrastructure Fund grant to assist with costs associated with building upfit, according to the release.
