Sossamon Construction Co. of Gaffney submitted the lone bid Thursday for the Downtown Greer Streetscape Project. The general contractor’s bid was $11,757,837.95.

The streetscape project includes work on all six roads in the central business district. The centerpiece is transforming Trade Street through a shared street design — milling it down to one inch below the curb line, installing pavers, repairing all broken curbing and gutters, ensuring ADA accessibility and installing all new landscaping, according to a news release.

The work is expected to begin in January and be mostly completed by June 30, 2020. The public can follow the project progress online.

With the bid process completed, engineering firm CoTransCo and the city of Greer will consider the bid.

“We’ll run the numbers and make sure that everything adds up. The next step is a 14-day protest period. Once that’s over, the project can be awarded,” said Jeff Hilderbran, CoTransCo president and CEO, said in the release. “If there are value engineering issues that the city wants to work with, then they can do that.”

Given the strong economy and scope of the project, Hilderbran said the single bid did not come as a surprise.

“With the economy going so well right now, there is a lot of work out there. And this is a really unique and expansive project that will require lots of moving parts,” Hilderbran said, in the release. “There may have been one bidder, but you probably will have six different contractors involved in it. There are not a lot of firms that can take on a project of this magnitude.

“Sossamon is well qualified and they’ve got a great track record. They have a history of doing similar style projects.”
