The Greenville Drive and BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina débuted of a new and improved children’s play area at Fluor Field prior to the evening game on May 30. The playground highlights both organizations’ commitment to the health and well-being of Upstate families, the two organizations said in a news release. The playground features upgraded equipment, games and signage.

Craig Brown, the president and owner of the Greenville Drive, and Matt Shaffer, a senior vice president for BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, highlighted the impact of their organizations’ partnership on encouraging area families to embrace healthy and active lifestyles without hesitation. A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the official playground opening, which immediately welcomed students and families from A.J. Whittenberg Elementary School to enjoy the new equipment.

“When you have a partnership that works for both parties then it strengthens and grows the community,” Brown said in the news release. “This playground is the manifestation of that partnership which is proud to continue inspiring kids and families to keep playing and remaining active and healthy.”

Blue Cross Blue Shield and The Drive have a long-standing partnership at Fluor Field, according to the release.

“The commitment BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina has to this area is shared with the Drive and we believe that makes the best partnerships,” Shaffer said in the release. “The Drive has fostered wellness and entertainment to create a wholesome environment in this community which has fostered tremendous growth and expansion in this area.”

The Greenville Drive, the South Atlantic League affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, are in their 14th season at Fluor Field in downtown Greenville. In 2017, the Drive was honored with the John H. Johnson President’s Award, presented by Minor League Baseball and given to “the total baseball franchise,” based on contributions to baseball in the community, promotion of the baseball industry, financial stability and contributions to league stability.
