A global identity and payment solutions provider is establishing its first North American manufacturing facility in Greer.

Switzerland-headquartered Matica Group’s $2 million investment will create 40 new jobs, according to a South Carolina Department of Commerce news release.

The company will manufacture central identification issuance systems at the new 38,000-square-foot facility at 2750 S. Highway 14, Pelham Crossing, a mixed-use office, industrial and retail park. Matica has 200 employees and 11 facilities worldwide, including a technology support office in Greenville County. Products manufactured at the new facility in Greer will include large-scale card personalization networks and desktop models, according to the release.

“We have had our sights on opening a factory in the U.S. for some time, since it is the world’s largest market for our specialized field of identification and payment solutions,” said Matica Group’s founder and CEO Sandro Camilleri in the release. “South Carolina consistently ranks as one of the most business-friendly states in the U.S. and this, combined with our existing expert technical staff already being located here, meant that Greer made perfect sense as a location for our new facility.”

Matica’s investment represents a significant boost to Greer’s economy, and products from the factory will serve the entire state, Greer Mayor Rick Danner said in a release from the city of Greer.

“This is more than an investment in our city; it signifies a vote of confidence in our community’s potential,” Danner said in the release. “Together, with companies like the Matica Group, Greer is setting the stage for a future of innovation and economic success.”

Matica’s new home is across from Pelham Medical Center, close to BMW, Michelin, Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport and Inland Port Greer. Greenberg Gibbons, a company  that specializes in flexible mixed-use spaces, is developing the business park with plans to include a convenience store, restaurant and bank, Greer’s release stated.

Colliers International is leasing the remaining Class A office, light industrial and warehousing flex space at Pelham Crossing. The design includes drive-in docks, tractor-trailer and auto parking, and a truck court, according to the Greer release.

Matica Group expects its Greer operations to be up and running in July.

“As Matica Group adds to its presence in the Upstate with this new manufacturing operation, we look forward to supporting the company in establishing a legacy in South Carolina,” South Carolina Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III said in the Commerce release. “These investments contribute to an evolving economy that is one of the most competitive business climates in the United States.”
